New Malaysia, Chinatown

In a narrow hallway in the heart of Bowery Street in Chinatown, NYC lies a hidden gem of a restaurant. The place is simply named New Malaysia and it brings great flavors of all that Malaysian cuisine has to offer – sweet, spicy and everything in between.

Malaysia was the very first country I ever traveled to and growing up I was exposed to the food from chicken sate to beef rendang. I always loved anything with tofu and used to devour char kway teow. Since leaving Asia about 10 years ago, I seldom had the opportunity to have Malaysian food – mainly because there weren’t many around or you had to do a good job trying to look for something authentic. You therefore could have imagined by excitement when the discovery of New Malaysia came along.

We ordered Roti Canai as an appetizer – an Indian soft crepe with a curry dipping sauce. One great thing about Malaysian food is that it does not have one single taste. It is a combination of Indian, Chinese, Thai and so you probably cannot get too bored with the variety. For the main course, we just had to order the char kway teow – flat rice noodles that is sauteed with vegetables and tofu using sweet soy sauce and sambal (a chilli paste). Having the dish just brought me back to Asia again! As an added vegetable, we picked the garlic bokchoy, whose freshness was evident from the bright green color of the leaves.

There were too many choices in the New Malaysia menu and this is definitely an incentive to return for more.
